Michael MacLeod has held top arts jobs – artistic and managerial – on three continents: Europe, North America and Asia. He has worked at the highest level in almost every type of classical music, ranging from a multi-arts festival to opera, from symphony orchestras to chamber music, and from period-instrument orchestras to a professional choir.

From 2011-2019, he was Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (Music Director: Jaap van Zweden – now also Music Director of the New York Philharmonic). Previous to this, he was General and Artistic Director of Glimmerglass Opera (the summer opera festival in central New York state), Executive Director of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut, Director of the City of London Festival, General Manager of Sir John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists and Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, Personal Representative of the Amadeus Quartet, Assistant Director of the National Centre for Orchestral Studies (based at the University of London) and General Manager of the Scottish Baroque Ensemble. He went to university at Amherst College, Massachusetts, and to school at Fettes College in Edinburgh. The son of a British diplomat, he was born in Bogota, Colombia, and then lived in Turkey, Austria, the USA (Denver, Los Angeles and Hawaii), Ethiopia, Mozambique, Angola and France (Marseilles and Paris). An adventurer by nature, he has taken a 22-foot live-aboard boat from the uppermost navigable origins of the Mississippi all the way down to New Orleans where the river flows into the Gulf of Mexico, done the Great Loop in an identical boat, climbed Kilimanjaro, and ridden a pedal bicycle from London to the Outer Hebrides where his branch of the MacLeod clan comes from.
